...according to philemon, a guest is made to feel at home in his country...i couldn't agree more, having spent a week (feb. 10-16) in limuru, kenya -- on the outskirts of nairobi -- for an agenda-setting consultation chaired by dr. christopher wright and sponsored by the lausanne theology working group and the world evangelical alliance...

....due to claire's wise and warm ways of keeping me from self-delusion, i went to this consultation fully expecting to participate as a listener...to my delight, i was welcomed as a colleague by two dozen or so theologians from around the world who gathered for five 14-hour days of paper-presenting, discussing, synthesizing, and writing...the overall dynamic and process were positive and productive, feeding well into the consultation's theme -- "following jesus in a broken world"...this was a good first step for a group that plans to meet over the next three years...

...arriving a couple days early, i was able to relax and get to know our kenyan hosts, like mercy and professor esther mombo, history professor and dean of st. paul's college...their hope in christ inspires me...i was surprised when mercy explained that the word safari -- popularly understood as an event (e.g., let's go on a safari) -- actually signifies a journey done with others...having gained tremendously from others' investment in me and given so much of my energy for five days, the latter sense of safari captures my experience at this working consultation...

...now comes the hard work of rewriting the consultation papers by early may for publication in a special october edition of ERT (evangelical review of theology)...i'll keep this post brief with an eye toward updating you in the months ahead...
