: : : We have found that genuine, unforced opportunities for gospel ministry in Japan arise when authentic relationships are formed. This takes both good times and God's timing. We've found that Japanese relationships require a formal port of entry by which the relationship can be easily defined. Conducting English classes is one such entry port.

Through English classes, we've been able to spend time with our neighbor, a wonderful high school senior named Tak. You may know him from a previous post (he's dancing in our living room). Claire has been a strict but caring teacher. She always asks him about school, his friends, his hopes and dreams. Saturday mornings have turned into a safe harbor of sorts for Tak, especially when he has experienced hardship. We're not surprised, then, when we get invited to events by people with whom we have formal relationships. We're always glad to receive an invitation to share life with others.

This morning we cheered for Tak as he and his group, B-Go Rhythm, took center stage at his high school festival. In the video, keep you eye on Tak, the masked man on the right.

As many of you may know, Japanese high school festivals are also fundraising events. With each hollering class trying to sell parents as much food as possible for end-of-year trips and other rewards, the atmosphere is kind of like a roudy science fair. Claire and I are always amused by the students' gamesmanship and gimmicks. Today our favorite was the cardboard robot selling fried cabbage.
