tomodachi

::: my (claire's) first neighborhood tomodachi (friend)...i'll call her "Y" for now...
we live in apartment number 104, and Y lives in apt. 105...

...last night, she came over to our house for dessert...when at 7pm i opened the door to let her in, i was mildly surprised to see her still dressed in her school uniform...she had just come from school (talk about long days)...we got to know each other while making carrot cake...it was a very fun and tactile start to what i pray will be a sweet friendship...

...she is a seventeen year old girl who has spent one summer in glendora, california (very close to asian access headquarters...neato coincidence)...she has conversational english ability--praise the lord!...and while she is very eager to practice english, i am equally eager to speak english with her (or whenever i can)...sometimes my brain can't take in all the japanese that i can't understand (very mentally and physically draining), so it's nice to be able to "relax" and speak english...

...what's cool is that ever since we arrived on the block Y's mother has initiated interest in me...at neighborhood cleanup days...coming to our place to explain neighborhood announcements and sign-up sheets...delivering sweet treats for me and bobby...following my time with Y yesterday, her mother graciously invited me and bobby to her house for dinner with the entire family next month on february 11th (a national holiday -- "foundation day" -- in japan)...

...this is quite exciting and pretty rare since most of our contacts with our neighbors have only been with the women...the hubbies are so busy at work, we never see them anywhere...so it'll be quite interesting to finally meet one of the neighborhood husbands...please pray that bobby will be able to spark some connection with Y's father...

...please continue to pray with us that as we meet, make cakes, and build relationships with our neighbors, we might be a sweet fragrance of christ to all of them :::
