urgency
::: a phone conversation this morning with a young man has me thinking all day...
...a former student of mine, he's in tokyo along with two other christian men, running the last lap of a ten-day missions trip...every day the trio has canvased college campuses, inviting as many students and strangers as possible to a bible study they conduct each afternoon...usually one or two people attend...from our conversation, i gathered a strong sense of urgency in the way they've gone about each day, almost to the point of exhaustion...
...his urgency has me thinking...
...encouragement often has a way of bringing about positive self-appraisal, doesn't it?...in this case, after the phone conversation i asked God, "do i need to strive for a greater sense of urgency in my daily outlook and actions?"...
...praying to God about this point was meaningful...i investigated what scripture has to say...ministry balance between gospel passion and relational patience is needed...coupled with an unhurried understanding of the many cultural cues and clues that govern japanese relationships...
...but should these things dampen our sense of urgency when it comes to the unreached?...
...no...but balance is needed...while romans 10:14-15, for example, resonate with gospel urgency, the verses occur in paul's larger discussion of God's patience and mercy with israel (rom. 9-11, esp. 11:25-32)...
