ten more
::: with all the snacks and drinks for our end-of-term party laid out on the tables, the only missing piece was the fifth and final member of my jr. high english class...
...class started at 7:00...
...at 7:07, feeling the effects of skipping lunch and dinner, i asked: "should we start our party? why don't we start passing around the snack trays?"...
..."no," said the four students, "everyone has to be here for all of us to eat"...
...at 7:12, with the ice cream softening, i ask again, this time with a gentle visual prompt: i pick up the main snack tray...
..."no," said one of the students, "we'll wait ten more"...
..."seconds?" i said...
..."minutes," said the student..."we have to start the party together as a class"

so what happened? did the person finally come? hehehe...
huffing and puffing, the last class member came about five minutes later...it was interesting for me as a newcomer to japanese culture to observe two things: first, the four students' shared (and natural) desire to wait for the last student; and second, the late student's heartfelt apology to the class...many values cultivated in japanese culture should merit our appreciation...
seriously...once again...the japanese people and their culture are definitely worth noting! pretty amazing! :)
