from raw to real

::: raw :::

...that word captures the degree of anguish and appeal found in the first twelve verses of psalm 51, arguably the most honest piece of confessional literature from the ancient world...

...those raw verses came from the hand of king david, a sinner who knew his sin all too well...

...i've been in that place too...way too many times...that place of raw anguish and appeal...that place where the closer you get to God, the more you see your ungodly nature...that place where the only thing you want or need is God's restorative mercy...

...thank God for the first twelve verses of psalm 51...they allow us to be raw, ugly, human before Him who alone can restore us by his mercy...

...but psalm 51 doesn't end with verse 12...

...it moves from raw to...

::: real :::

...verse 13 says, "then i will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you" (esv)...

...when we genuinely experience God's restorative mercy, He moves us from raw to real...from raw anguish over our sins to a more real, authentic ministry to sinners, who, most of all, just like myself, need to experience God in the same restorative way...

...the turn from verses 1-12 to verse 13ff in psalm 51 remind me that it is not my right to finger-point and adjudicate...rather, it is my privilege to experience the gospel as i anguish over my sins and then embrace others with the overflow of God's restorative love and mercy...

::: we pray that our work in japan consistently reflects this mvt from raw to real :::
