My California original and me in front of one of the most original and famous sites in Japan: the gate (torii) of Itsukushima Shrine. Unlike most Shinto gates which are perched on rolling hillsides or pinched between tight urban corridors, this gate uniquely squats in the blue-green sea at the mouth of Miyajima (literally "Shrine Island"). In the foreground are the outerlying coastal districts of Hiroshima. On a side note: I love our combined shadow.

In an upcoming post, more about why we were at a nearby island (Etajima) for five days along with a dozen or so other Asian Access families.
