gym

::: some observations as an outsider from my times at the local gym:

  • sanitation: everything is meticulously arranged and maintained...every user meticulously cleans the exercise equipment, usually before usage, always after usage; everyone must take a shower before using the swimming pool

  • socializing: minimal, if any, socializing among users...everyone's focus is fitness

  • structure: majority of users carry a notebook (and pencil) containing a personalized, structured fitness program

  • shoes: everyone removes their shoes in these areas: stairways, carpeted areas, locker rooms

  • staff: every hour the staff walks around and says hello with a slight bow to every person

  • sendoff: when you leave, at least two staff members say with verve, "thank you for your hard work" (o-tsukare-sama deshita)...fifteen minutes before closing, classical music is played as a gentle reminder
